Persistent Threads for a Hybrid Voice/Text Web-board

A Distance Learning Environment typically contains a collaborative tool such as an asynchronous web–board, synchronous text chat or synchronous audio communication. Users are restricted to communicating only with those using the same media, either text or voice, each of which suffer from its own disadvantages when used in isolation. We propose a bridge between text and voice communication that allows a broader spectrum of users access to the same content in a persistent and real-time fashion. The application will ultimately be trialed within the KEWL distance-learning environment as an alternative to existing communication applications. A method of evaluating the effectiveness of the hybrid tool is presented. We hope that this method aids in constructing tools that can help bridge the Digital Divide.
